Building a Dugout Canoe

The log is about 16 ft 6 inches long and 23 inches in diameter and is nearly straight with no large knots.

I decided to try making a dugout canoe from a white pine log I had dragged out of the woods last winter.  This is a pretty nice log . No branches or knots and pretty straight. Is it large enough around to make a canoe?  I'm not sure. How to begin? After researching this subject I have decided to just go ahead and start.  I plan on following my instincts rather than any exact procedure or tradition. I've built several small boats before and have done quite a bit of woodcarving so I have some general ideas about how I want to go about it.
At this point I am unsure exactly what kind of canoe I want.  Should it be for the river or the big lake? Should it be easy to turn or track straight? Should the bow and stern arch up high on the ends to keep waves out or should the ends be low to reduce the effect of wind? I will let the canoe tell me how it wants to become a canoe.
